SEANC sponsored a debate between the candidates seeking to replace Dale Folwell — Brad Briner and EMPAC-endorsed Rep. In the debate, Briner, a personal investment manager, repeated a false claim that the pension system costs 16% of the overall state budget, which is more than three times what it actually costs. Executive Director Ardis Watkins points out in the podcast that this inaccuracy makes it seem like our retirees are a huge burden to the state, which is untrue. Briner even said the pension system is "crowding out so many other priorities of the state."
