Cooper vetoes raises for UNC, community college employees, retiree bonuses

Nov 08, 2019

Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed bills on Nov. 8 that included raises for UNC and community college employees, noncertified school personnel and bonuses for retirees.

For SEANC members and their families who have been waiting for this funding, this a tough blow that moves things back to square one. The governor’s latest action makes it more important than ever that senators vote to override the veto on the full budget.

Tell your Senator to support a veto override of the budget and pass better raises for higher education employees and non-certified school personnel and bonuses for retirees.

The General Assembly will return to Raleigh in mid-November and again in January. SEANC will keep pounding away for equitable raises for all state employees, higher pay for correctional personnel, and more funding for retirees.

In August, SEANC worked to pass the largest two-year pay increase in a decade for most state employees through the same mini-budget process. Most state employees will receive a 5% pay increase over the next two years as well as five bonus days of leave.

SEANC lobbyists continue to pressure lawmakers to fund 5% pay raises for EHRA and SHRA employees at colleges and universities as part of a separate bill once the budget is in place.
