N.C. Primary Election sends shockwaves across the country
Mar 08, 2024
Tuesday’s primary election in North Carolina had ripple effects across the nation.
Nationally, Nikki Haley gave up on her bid for the GOP Presidential nomination after coming up short on Super Tuesday primaries, including in this state. The race is now officially a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The field is also set in the North Carolina Governor race, which promises to be one of the most watched votes in the country. Lt. Governor Mark Robinson defeated EMPAC-endorsed candidate and State Treasurer Dale Folwell and Bill Graham, while Attorney General Josh Stein won the Democratic party nomination.
Rep. Wesley Harris, the EMPAC-endorsed candidate for State Treasurer, won his party nomination and will face Brad Briner in the general election. In legislative races, 8 of 10 candidates endorsed by EMPAC also won. Rep. Michael Wray and Sen. Mike Woodard lost their races despite our endorsement.
There were a few surprises on Tuesday. State Superintendent Catherine Truitt lost her primary, and Rep. John Hardister lost his bid for Commissioner of Labor. Also, a student at East Carolina University, Wyatt Gable, defeated 10-term NC House member George Cleveland.
In this week’s SEANC View Podcast, Executive Director Ardis Watkins and Communications Director Jonathan Owens dive into the election results and the implications all the races have on state employees.
