EMPAC Endorses Four Wake County Commissioner Candidates
EMPAC Endorses Four Wake County Commissioner Candidates
RALEIGH — EMPAC, the political action committee of the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC), has endorsed four candidates for the Wake County Board of Commissioners in the November 3 election:
District 2 — John Adcock (R)
District 7 — Vickie Adamson (D)
At-Large — Christine Kushner (D)
At-Large — Mona Singh (D)
On September 21, Wake County commissioners voted 5–2 to let Charlotte-based Atrium Health, part of the multi-state Advocate Health system, become the sole corporate member of WakeMed. Adamson voted against the deal.
SEANC opposes the merger because it will lead to increased costs for patients. Higher hospital prices fall on the State Health Plan, which covers state employees, teachers and retirees, and those costs reach members through higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Wake County has the largest population of state employees and retirees in North Carolina, many of whom rely on WakeMed for care.
The North Carolina AFL-CIO has also endorsed Kushner and Singh. The local labor federation, the Triangle Labor Council, rescinded its endorsement of District 2 Commissioner Safiyah Jackson after she voted for the merger and chose not to endorse anyone else.
“When a conglomerate sets WakeMed’s prices, state employees and retirees pay the bill,” said SEANC EMPAC Statewide Chair Junior Hulen. “These four candidates have shown they’ll stand with public servants, and we’re asking our members in Wake County to stand with them.”
The at-large race is countywide, and voters may choose two candidates. The District 2 and District 7 races appear only on ballots in those districts.
Early voting runs October 15–31. Election Day is November 3, 2026. Voters can check their sample ballot to confirm which commissioner races appear on it.
